Vacuum Screen Printing Table

April 19, 2013

I’ve been interested in building a screen printing table since I graduated from IU (and in turn lost access to their amazing print lab). I decided to go all out and make a vacuum table… having to peel your freshly printed paper off a screen can be obnoxious for a large print run.

Some searching led me to two decent tutorials. This: http://diysilkscreenprinting.blogspot.com/2010/12/building-your-own-vacuum-table-poster.html    … and this: http://vimeo.com/20763545

I used the tutorials as rough guides, and made a few variations. I chose the dimensions of 32” x 36” so that I could use my largest screen in portrait or landscape orientation. Also, while having vacuum on the paper is nice, it’s also nice to switch the vacuum on and off as needed. My solution was adding a little door with a convenient handle that I could easily flip open and shut as needed (my shop vac switch is on the fritz). A rare earth magnet on the door contacts a recessed screw, ensuring a tight closure.

I fabricated a steel base for the table for practical purposes, and because I generally like the aesthetics of square tube steel (this gave me the chance to practice welding on an inconsequential piece). I also hinged the table in the front and fabricated steel adjustment strips which allow the rear of the table to be raised up to put the table at different angles. It can sit flat, or raise higher than is necessary (if you wanted to use it as a drawing table, for instance).

I’m pretty happy with how this project turned out. It’s nice being able to hand craft the pieces that are helping to shape my studio into a dream space. Now I just gotta get to printing…….

Since February of last year, DIYPHL has listed hundreds and hundreds of events in Philadelphia, passed out thousands of fliers, and printed nearly a dozen unique monthly calendars designed by different artists. Needless to say, we’ve been busy.

But that’s only because this is a busy…

Buy a book. Reblog. Go to shows. Be punk.

Got a photo in this book, put together by a rad group of people.
